According to external merchandise trade statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on the 27th, in June 2026 the total value of Hong Kong’s overall exports and imports of goods rose by 53.4% and 45.4% year on year respectively.

The statistics show that in June the total value of Hong Kong’s overall exports of goods stood at HK$641.1 billion, while the value of imports was HK$693.0 billion, leaving a visible trade deficit of HK$52.0 billion, equivalent to 7.5% of the value of goods imports.

In the first six months, the total value of Hong Kong’s overall exports and imports of goods rose by 39.1% and 40.6% year on year respectively, with a visible trade deficit of HK$294.6 billion, equivalent to 7.9% of the value of goods imports.

Analysed by country and region, the value of Hong Kong’s overall exports to Asia rose by 54.4% year on year in June. Within Asia, exports to Singapore surged 83% year on year, to Taiwan 79.9%, and to the Chinese mainland 59.2%. The value of overall exports to the United States also jumped 114.3% year on year. Pang Mei, Director of Research at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said that Hong Kong’s exports maintained strong growth in the first half of the year, mainly benefiting from the accelerated global adoption of artificial intelligence, which drove sustained robust demand for electronic products. At the same time, the year-on-year growth rates of overall exports to Asia as well as to major destinations such as the mainland and the US in June all picked up pace compared with May.

Chung Ki-fung, HKSAR Legislative Councillor for the Import and Export constituency, told reporters in an interview that the impressive figures reflect that Hong Kong, backed by the strong manufacturing base of the motherland, is demonstrating remarkable resilience in recovery and growth momentum in its external trade. The country’s rapid breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and high technology are the core engine driving the sharp surge in Hong Kong’s exports. Hong Kong should continue to leverage the unique advantages of “one country, two systems,” evolve from its traditional re-export role into a “global high-value-added supply chain service centre,” more actively integrate into and serve the nation’s overall development, and inject new impetus into Hong Kong’s broader economy.

Looking ahead, an HKSAR government spokesman projected that robust global demand for AI-related electronic products will continue to provide strong support for Hong Kong’s merchandise trade performance.
