Industry News | Import and Export Up 17.6% in First 8 Months

According to customs statistics, China’s total goods trade volume reached RMB 34.78 trillion in the first eight months of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 17.6% (all growth rates below refer to year-on-year changes). Exports hit RMB 20.17 trillion, rising by 14.6%, while imports stood at RMB 14.61 trillion, up 22%.

In August alone, the country’s total import and export volume of goods amounted to RMB 4.65 trillion, growing by 19.8%. Exports were RMB 2.73 trillion, an 18.6% increase, and imports reached RMB 1.92 trillion, rising by 21.7%.

Breakdown by Trade Mode

In the first eight months, general trade imports and exports totalled RMB 20.89 trillion, up 10.5%; processing trade registered RMB 6.75 trillion, a 26.4% surge; bonded logistics trade reached RMB 6 trillion, jumping 42.3%.

Breakdown by Trading Partners

Trade volume between China and ASEAN hit RMB 5.95 trillion, growing by 20.6%. Trade with the EU stood at RMB 4.2 trillion, up 8.1%, and trade with the United States reached RMB 2.76 trillion, a mild rise of 1.3%. Meanwhile, total imports and exports with Belt and Road Initiative partner countries amounted to RMB 17.74 trillion, rising by 15.9%.

Breakdown by Foreign Trade Entities

Private enterprises recorded imports and exports worth RMB 19.79 trillion, a 17.6% increase; foreign-invested enterprises posted RMB 10.15 trillion, up 18.1%; state-owned enterprises hit RMB 4.77 trillion, growing by 16.9%.

Breakdown by Key Commodities

On the export side, mechanical and electrical products exports reached RMB 12.91 trillion, rising by 21.9%; labour-intensive goods exports totalled RMB 2.74 trillion, down 0.6%; agricultural products exports stood at RMB 492.03 billion, up 4.2%.

On the import side, imports of mechanical and electrical products hit RMB 6.21 trillion, surging 31.6%; crude oil imports totalled 321 million tonnes, down 14.6%; agricultural products imports reached RMB 1.04 trillion, growing by 6.6%.
